Advice on purchasing a digital SLR camera

Those close to me know that I am passionate about photography and as a result I often get asked for advice on what cameras to buy. Here’s what I generally tell my friends.

Photography is more about art than it is about science. As a result, the quality and capabilities of your equipment only gets you so far. In the end it’s up to the photographer to make a great photograph. Keeping this in mind I first recommend that people not go overboard when buying equipment (unless you are full of disposable income and a gadget geek – I can truely relate, to the latter point anyway). Based on my experience I have determined that the three most important qualities in camera equipment are: digital SLR camera

2. Image quality
3. Form factor

After explaining what I look for in these qualities I will give you my recommendations on equipment. I’ll then provide a few links to great resources for learning more.

Despite the high level of sophistication in today’s GPS technology, there is something that GPS devices are lacking: quality off-road mapping. As long as you stay on the road, your GPS device can help you get to any destination, but as soon as you veer off into an unmapped area with no roads, you are on your own. Or rather, you were.

The Denver-based digital mapping company Intermap Technologies recently launched its new iPhone application, AccuTerra, which allows users to view maps of U.S. national and state parks whether they are on- or off-line. Hikers and outdoors adventurers now have a possibly life-saving tool at their disposal that will guide them to where they need to go, even when on foot and far into a wilderness area. Apple praised Intermap’s application for its usability, performance, technology integration and adoption. The launch of the app was expected at the beginning of the awards conference, but the first maps hit the Apple store only afterwards, due to the length of the approval process, but they definitely live up to the hype.

Intermap’s main business, and this explains in large part why the AccuTerra app is so successful, is not iPhone application development but rather high-tech, aerial 3D digital maps. Intermap had drawn up contracts with Magellan GPS and the U.S. government to provide them with usable 3D map data. The release of this new app marks the first time that Intermap has developed a technology specifically meant to be used in consumer electronics. Intermap’s first bluetooth mobile phone application thus benefited from the company’s previous experience. In order to come up with AccuTerra the company set up a completely separate business unit solely dedicated to applying their existing mapping technologies to the iPhone’s capabilities. AccuTerra fulfils a need left by GPS systems lack of off-road mapping. Concerning this topic, Kevin Thomas, vice president of marketing at Intermap, stated that while GPS does a great job on the road, it becomes useless once you get to the end of the pavement. AccuTerra has a varied collection of available maps that include sate forests and national parks for each individual state. These include popular hiking and biking trails.

AccuTerra works perfectly even in the most remote trails or forests, since it does not require a wireless connection, so regardless of weather or place, you can find your way with this app. AccuTerra displays a users distance from the nearest roads, trails, rivers and warming huts. Terrain information is displayed as well. State park maps will be sold for $1.99 each and national park maps will go for $2.99.

Not long after ONDA dropped the widescreen VX747, it’s also introducing a tastier-looking successor, the VX757. This new PMP has a rather odd display configuration: 16:10 aspect ration. We know wide screen is 16:9, but what is 16:10? Obviously ONDA has some explaining why they are supporting the same aspect ratio as Apple Cinema HD, and we’d get you all the juicy details once it comes in. Well i was having an issue with converting this file, thats why it took me so long to upload it, even though i made it a few days ago.

Anyways, here is the new Onda VX777LE, as you can see from the video review, it really is a totally different player from the VX777, it still has the nice look, but its entire UI is different.

The player does use the RK2706 chipset and much of the UI is similar to that of the Nationite S:Flo, it is however not as slick as the S:Flo, the UI is cruder, the touch screen is resistive and although i won’t say its very sensitive or not very responsive, it does at times make the UI harder to use.

I think people will like this player because the UI is easier to use, it does allow for better use of the music player and it will be priced under $90 when it comes out.

Well those are the major points at the moment, the other big thing is the chip being used, now i think this one bucks the latest Onda trend for the new ChinaChip system in favour of a rockchip, as to which rockchip … i dont know, cold be the standard 2707/8 or their newer 2711B thing, this was not stated but if it is the older 2707/8 then all this screen beauty is lost as the player will not be able to play movie files to match the screen res!!! .. we will have to wait and see on that one, but the fact the player does not have the HD tage after the name may mean its the older gen rockchips
